First international deployment of mOm Essential Incubators heads to Ukraine amidst increasing premature birth rate

mOm Incubators Ltd (“mOm”) has partnered with international development not-for-profit, Crown Agents, to deliver a first shipment of mOm Essential Incubators to the Ukraine. Crown Agents, who are managing a Ukraine emergency response for essential medical equipment, will be overseeing the safe delivery of a total of 51 mOm Essential Incubators into the country over the next several weeks. This will provide care and life-saving intervention for up to 100 babies per week.

This vital work is being funded by Jersey Overseas Aid, Jersey's official international aid agency, in partnership with a Jersey-based philanthropic foundation.

Since February, stress and trauma have become a daily part of life for many of the 32 million Ukrainians who have not fled the country. Reports are now stating that this stress is having a negative effect on pregnant women with doctors seeing a sharp rise in premature births.

The mOm Essential Incubator can be assembled anywhere and used by clinicians immediately,  without compromising on effectiveness or health standards. The incubator does not require lengthy training and is energy efficient, manoeuvrable, equipped with a back-up battery -- which will be vital as Ukraine continues to face power outages. This compact device is set to reduce the overwhelming burden faced by an already struggling healthcare system and overworked healthcare professional staff.

CEO & Founder of mOm, James Roberts said, “The original inspiration for the mOm Essential Incubator came from a documentary that focused on providing Neonatal care in challenging environments. Helping the situation in Ukraine is confirmation that we are doing the right thing and able to provide clinicians with a flexible solution to their problems -- not only in the NHS but globally. Ultimately, we are saving babies lives in difficult circumstances.

Douglas Melville, Vice-Chair of Jersey Overseas Aid said, “These robust and easy-to-use incubators will undoubtedly save innocent lives and we are proud to be supporting Crown Agents in getting them into besieged cities in Ukraine. This complements previous JOA-funded initiatives with Crown Agents, working through the Ukraine Ministry of Health, ensuring the procurement and distribution of emergency trauma kits, ballistic vests and helmets for frontline medical staff and much needed oxygen concentrators

Crown Agents CEO, Fergus Drake said, “We are in constant contact with the Ministry of Health Ukraine through our long-standing work in country and emergency response. Incubators are one of the main items they are asking us for right now. We’re delighted to not only be able to respond to their request but go a step further by delivering the most cutting-edge medical goods that will ensure health professionals can provide the best care in these pressing circumstances.”

Commenting on the efforts of UK organisations working together to respond to Ukraine’s needs, Director of Health and Life Sciences at Innovate UK, Richard Hebdon stated, “This rapid deployment of portable neonatal incubators to Ukraine is remarkable. Innovate UK are very proud to have supported mOm Incubators on their journey to regulatory approval and clinical use, and it’s fantastic that we’re in a position to help a UK business respond to such an urgent health crisis.”
